Preliminary study
What chance does my product idea have on the market?
In the preliminary study, the problem (or idea) is analyzed and research is carried out on e.g. the market situation, the level of competition and possible patents. Product ideas and requirements are formulated and the project mandate for product development is defined.
Concept
How do we ensure that no important aspects are forgotten?
The main problems are identified in the concept. Which functions are required, which operating states must be taken into account? Functional structures, operating principles and effective structures are developed and concretized into solution variants. The system and product structure are developed to enable a clear allocation of further information and work steps. Technical and economic criteria are defined, which are used to select the solution variants that should be developed further.
Draft design
What needs to be taken into account and what will my product look like?
For the draft, a research is carried out on the applicable standards, from which further requirements are derived. Components are pre-selected with the involvement of component suppliers. The functions of the product are described and the shape of the function carriers and their arrangement to one another is defined. The materials, energy sources and media to be used are preselected. The design criteria (e.g. service life calculation and strength verification) are defined and applied.
Engineering design
How should the components and assemblies be designed to be functional and production-friendly?
If the product structure is not already in the design, it is fully mapped in the CAD system. The manufacturing processes for the components are determined and the components are designed accordingly. Component tolerances and surface qualities are defined. The assemblies are assembled with all production and standard parts. Final proof of strength, service life and kinematic parameters is provided.
Design to manufacturing
What documents are required and what information must they contain?
Create manufacturing drawings for components, assembly drawings and parts lists. Assignment of attributes, such as article numbers or specific parameters for use in PDM systems.
